About Joe
Joe was exposed to construction at an early age, as his father, Lou Meylan, was a captain in the Navy and a Seabee (amphibious construction battalion). Lou later worked for Pacific Bell, which ultimately became Pacific Telesis, and oversaw construction throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Lou Meylan hired Joe, during his Christmas and Summer vacations from college, as a general laborer to help offset expenses. After graduating with a degree in Business and a Minor in Construction Management, Joe eagerly joined the carpenters union and worked for about four years as a journeyman carpenter on commercial tenant improvements and concrete poured-in-place hospitals. Eventually, Joe moved into an estimating role and worked for six years as an estimator at Pearson and Johnson in San Francisco. The Loma Prieta Earthquake provided ample opportunities for aid and improvement in construction, and thus, Meylan Construction was born.
Joe Meylan has a professional degree from Chico State University in Business Administration with a Major in Marketing and a Minor in Industrial Technology. Joe also completed the construction certificate program at San Francisco State University.
Joe has been extremely active in the American Society of Professional Estimators, also known as the ASPE, has been the past President of the Golden Gate Chapter, and is a current Certified Professional Estimator. Joe has taught estimating at continuing education programs for Sonoma State University and has given several seminars and presentations for estimating, including a recent seminar for the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI).
When not working on Meylan Construction projects, Joe is active in the local community where he serves on the Board of Directors for Lifehouse Agency, which serves people with developmental disabilities. Joe has served Marin Housing for the Handicap, two terms for Marin Services for Women, and is an active member of the Marin Tips Club. However, the highlights of his life are his wife and twins.
Joe enjoys ski racing and riding dirt bikes. He doesn't golf because it doesn't offer enough G-Force!
